Correspondences and Elevation: An Installation of Paintings – 6/25

Michele Guieu, one of San Diego’s most energized artists, is moving to the Bay Area. Come to her new exhibition at the San Diego Art Institute for a chance to see her and her work displayed before she leaves.
While she may no longer live here, I will certainly continue to consider her a part of this city and its recent cultural fabric. Furthermore, I have a pretty strong feeling this will not be her last show here in America’s Finest.

Michele Guieu’s installation of paintings is one of her finest to date. The photo derived subject matter is personal and authentic to her experience as mother, emigrant and sensitive artist. The back story to her work is most interesting and salient to her practice. She uses a limited palette that reinforces a sober and straight forward approach to image making. The figures and forms connect and disconnect while the viewer scans the installation. Another step in the right direction for a dedicated artist.
